Throughout Ikaria, you can find scattered churches and chapels. It has about 58 parishes and almost every parish has its own church, which is dedicated to a patron saint.
The spread of Christianity in the island is not known precisely, but nevertheless, according to studies, Ikaria was christianized by the early years of spreading the faith. At times in history, the island had an independent diocese, while today the metropolitan seat of the island is located in Samos.
The church of Agia Irini is located in the archaeological site of Kampos, the village which was the ancient capital of the island, known as Dolichi or Oinoe. This is one of the most important monuments of Ikaria.
The monastery is located between the villages Oxe and Mavrato. It is an important component of the history and culture of Ikaria.
